Candidates for Rigger will be trained in the following requirements:
- Selection and use of wire rope, chain and synthetic web slings, rigging hardware, and lifting devices
- Interpretation of rated charts for rigging gear
- Safe rigging practices and procedures
- Hand and radio communications and the responsibilities of the Rigger in Charge
- Determination of weight and center of gravity of loads
- Selection and use of hoists, chain falls and come-alongs
- Lifting and Handling gear inspection
Using the above acquired skills the rigger will be expected to support the following shipbuilding processes:
- Support the assembly and disassembly of machinery and equipment on and off the ships
- Responsible for lifting, moving and positioning ships and shipyard machinery, equipment, structural parts and other heavy loads
- Rig nuclear components
- Working under radiological controls (obtain and work with a TLD). Provide emergency response to fires and accidents
