Overview

The successful candidate will contribute to the design and construction support of the VIRGINIA Class submarine program at Electric Boat’s Groton Shipyard.  This individual will be cognizant of a variety of components and/or systems that are on-board VIRGINIA Class submarines.  Waterfront Mechanical Engineering’s primary areas of expertise include the following:

  • Internal mechanical systems such as weapons shipping and handling, the torpedo tubes and the payload tubes
  • External mechanical systems such as the towed sonar, hatches and the secondary propulsion unit
  • Engineered components including valves, manifolds, and filters
  • Vendor produced systems such as the reverse osmosis system, the atmospheric monitoring system, and the diesel generator

Waterfront Mechanical Engineering’s role is to provide engineering and design oversight for drawings, components, and systems.  A Waterfront Engineer must also engage in a collaborative working relationship with the Electric Boat Design Union to maintain the VIRGINIA Class design drawings.  A Waterfront Engineer will be asked to support the procurement of some components and systems, troubleshoot systems during new construction, and also provide engineering support of the systems during post-delivery service periods.  Newly hired engineers will be assigned a mentor for a period to assist in learning the Engineering duties and on the job training will be provided to ensure procedure compliance and safety.

Responsibilities:

  • Applicant must be able to effectively read, write, and interpret specifications, procedures, reports, drawings and other documents
  • Applicant must have strong verbal and communication skills to effectively transfer information to team members
  • Strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills in order to evaluate situations make recommendations and take prompt and effective action
  • Applicant should have the interpersonal and communication skills necessary to investigate problems by effectively asking questions, extracting necessary data from available sources, and working with others to determine root causes and implement appropriate solutions

Qualifications

Required:

  • Bachelor of Science or Higher in Engineering
  • 4+ years of engineering experience
  • Periodic weekend and off-shift availability as required

Skills

  • Above average technical writing ability and verbal communication skills
  • Experience working with either commercial or military specifications
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a multi-disciplinary team
  • Basic computer skills, including use of Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, and Power Point (or equivalent)
