Overview

**Premium Posting**

The position of Dock Technician – Electrical supports operations on the waterfront including Graving Docks 1, 2, & 3; the Sea Shuttle; the Holland; the future Floating Dry Dock; vessels in dock and afloat; and floating equipment. The Dock Technicians perform preventive maintenance on cognizant equipment, stand watch (covering 3 shifts/day, 7 days/week), perform rounds of the Groton waterfront, respond to emergent issues, operate the Sea Shuttle and Holland in various shipyards (Groton, Quonset Point, Newport News Shipbuilding, Philadelphia, Norfolk Naval Shipyard), monitor the Sea Shuttle and Holland during tow from the supporting tug. Support all ship movements at the Groton shipyard.  Dock Technicians are expected to support barge shipments in rotation including short (approximately 8 hour) tug trips between Groton and Quonset Point, and long (approximately 60 hour) tug trips between Groton/Quonset Point and Virginia.  Additionally, Dock Technicians, regardless of shift, are expected to support docking/undocking evolutions.  The successful candidate will have a demonstrated work ethic, a “can do” attitude, an ability to work independently and as part of the team, and the electrical ability to maintain and repair equipment.

Candidate must be able to:

  • Maintain and operate equipment associated with dry docks and Sea Shuttle, such as power and lighting distribution, alarms, HVAC, motors, controllers, and transformers.
  • Maintain watchstanding and maintenance logs.
  • Make inspections of the dry dock and pier areas for safety and fire hazards.
  • Be capable of climbing 50 foot vertical ladders and steep stairways, candidate must be able to work at high heights and in confined spaces.
  • Assist in moving and positioning of ships in and out of dry dock.
  • Be willing to work frequent overtime including weekends, holidays, and also work odd hours to support docking, undocking, Sea Shuttle, Holland and training evolutions in accordance with the MTC Agreement.
  • Be willing to frequently travel via tug boat to support transportation of hull sections and equipment via the Sea Shuttle and Holland between Groton, Philadelphia, and Quonset Point as well as Groton/Quonset Point and Newport News Shipbuilding/Norfolk Naval Shipyard in accordance with the MTC Agreement.
  • Regularly fly on either the EB shuttle or commercial carriers to support Sea Shuttle and Holland operations.
  • Participate in extensive OJT, to read numerous manuals and complete several qualifications in order to qualify on dry dock, floating dock, Holland and Sea Shuttle systems.
  • Must obtain fall protection certification and qualify as an aerial lift operator.
  • Must be capable of using a computer and familiar with MS Office programs.
  • Prepare the dock for docking and undocking of Navy vessels.
  • Assist in snow removal for the dry dock and pier areas to ensure personnel safety.
  • Perform maintenance and “housekeeping” tasks on the dry docks and Sea Shuttle.
  • Be willing to become "Black Water" transfer qualified through EB.  Consists of receiving Tetanus and Hepatitis A vaccination, or signing a waiver to not receive them at the employee's own risk.
  • Be willing to become fuel transfer qualified.  Consists of following USCG regulations and EB Environmental requirements.  Fuel transfer qualification will allow the employee to be the "person-in-charge".
  • Be willing to become qualified as a competent diesel generator technician.  This includes off-site and/or on-site training by a qualified individual on the systems used within the docking organization.  Diesel generator qualification will enable the employee to troubleshoot, repair, and replace parts as required to complete the evolution.  The employee will not hold a "Diesel Mechanic's" license as a result of this training.
  • Work any shift as assigned based on seniority after initial training period.

Qualifications

HS or equivalent is required or 2+ years technical experience. 

 

Candidate must:

  • Have a background and knowledge of electrical systems
  • Have the capability to troubleshoot and repair electrical systems and components using applicable technical publications and drawings

Skills

  • Previous tug boat, dry dock, Barge, floating dry dock or line handling experience preferred
  • Demonstrated work ethic and willingness to support operational commitments
  • Ability to work from high heights
