Department 415 is responsible for the engineering and design of hydraulic, compressed air, and ventilation systems on COLUMBIA Class submarines. Department 415 engineering is responsible for these fluid systems from concept development to comprehensive integration into the ship design including ship construction and test.

 

Engineers are responsible for coordination and oversight of the multi-discipline, multi-faceted, technical efforts required to accomplish the design and construction of the COLUMBIA Class.

 

These responsibilities include:

 

Technical Work: Establish system functional and operational requirements; Review and

approve engineering calculations (e. g. pressure drop, flow analyses, electrical loads, and heat transfer); Prepare technical justification and updates to system diagrams; Review material and equipment selections;

 

System design improvements: Resolve design and potential construction issues; Develop specifications and audit specification compliance; Development/review of disclosures; Configuration manage system technical products.

 

System Integration: Incorporate system hardware within the physical arrangement of the

ship; Manage system interfaces; Develop system operating instructions, test forms and

maintenance procedures.

 

Project Management: Meet quality, budget and schedule targets; Meet program milestones -technical integration with other disciplines required; Communicate with NAVSEA, Ship’s Force, private contractors and other shipyards; Give presentations. Some travel (domestic and/or foreign) may be necessary.

 

Qualifications

Required:

  • A Bachelor of Science in Engineering degree or higher in Mechanical, Aerospace, Marine, Civil, Nuclear, or Chemical.
  • 4+ years engineering experience 

 

Preferred:

  • Prior experience with design and/or testing of Fluid Systems, such as, hydraulic, or compressed air or ventilation systems.

Skills

  • Strong analytical skills, communication skills, and willingness to engage stakeholders to perform assigned tasks.
  • Ability to lead team to resolve complex technical issues.
