Overview

Department 489 is seeking highly motivated individuals to support the design and procurement of the COLUMBIA Class Turbine Generator (TG) sets. D489 engineers are responsible for the design, manufacture, test, and delivery of the TG sets for the state-of-the-art electric drive propulsion system on COLUMBIA Class submarine.

 

Responsibilities

 

  • Collaborate with support organization personnel and other engineering disciplines to resolve supplier technical challenges and non-conformances
  • Review of Supplier technical submittals
  • Provide oversight of testing at vendor facilities and the compatibility test facility (CTF) in Philadelphia, PA
  • Participate in technical discussions with vendor(s), Prime contractor and NAVY customers
  • Review internal documentation to assure that requirements have been met
  • Preparation of technical correspondence to NAVY customers
  • Ideal candidate should have excellent communication skills to allow close communication of technical issues with NAVY customers and Electric Boat management.
  • Frequent travel may be required to participate in the supplier’s factory acceptance and CTF testing.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical, Electrical, or Systems engineering or related technical degree
  • 0 to 3 years of related engineering experience
  • Working knowledge in Microsoft Office applications, especially in Excel, Word, Project, PowerPoint and VISIO is required
  • The ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Defense secret clearance is required

Preferred:

  • Master’s degree in Electrical engineering, Mechanical Engineering with experience with electrical or electromechanical design, and Systems Engineering is preferred.
  • Experience in subcontractor management including supplier selection, contracting, negotiations, risk management, and quality assurance is preferred
  • Experience in system component requirements definition and analysis, component design and qualification
  • Prior experience with review and approval of detailed technical manuals
  • Prior experience qualifying vendors in accordance with NAVSEA Technical Publication Welding and Non-Destructive Testing Requirements
  • Prior experience with power and controls systems applications
  • Prior experience with complex hardware testing

Skills

 

  • Candidate must be highly motivated, perform independently, as well as interact with other groups and organizations, including interfacing regularly with the Navy customer, in an engineering environment
  • Candidate must possess strong verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills
  • Frequent travel may be required
