Strategic Weapons Systems (SWS) COLUMBIA Waterfront Engineering, department 445, is seeking highly motivated entry level test engineers to provide comprehensive technical support of construction activities. This position is located in Groton, CT, with the primary responsibility of proactively supporting the SWS and the associated electrical and or mechanical tests for the COLUMBIA Class.  This includes processing test changes and updating test procedures as required for both the Groton and Quonset Point shipyards.  The Waterfront Engineering team provides direct support to the shipyard trades and support organizations to ensure the safe, efficient, and continuous completion of construction activities in a manner that results in delivery of ships consistent with the design intent. Specifically, this individual works as the Platform Integrator (PI) member of the Joint Test Group (JTG) member in the management of the SWS test program. The individual will work as part of a group of engineers engaged in the issuance of new construction tests and maintenance of contractually required tests in support of Electric Boat's New Construction test program. Our test engineers will interface with a team consisting and not limited to multiple Strategic Programs (SP) branches and their contractors, Electric Boat Design and Engineering, Ship's Management, Planning, Operations, Ships Test Organization (STO), Supervisor of Shipbuilding (SUPSHIP), and Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) PMS397 to act as the interface for the Groton shipyard as the SWS COLUMBIA Waterfront Engineering organization grows.

 

Responsibilities will include the following:

  • Evaluate emergent shipyard issues that arise during construction or test and work with the team to rapidly develop technically acceptable resolutions
  • Facilitate the processing of Comprehensive Problem Reports (CPRs) Ordnance Documents (ODs) and Ordnance Procedures (OPs) to support SWS COLUMBIA construction
  • Support team in providing direction to Groton trades via disposition of Change Notices (CNs), Test Inspection Report (TIR) UNSATs, and CPRs
  • Support final assembly, test, certification, and delivery activities for COLUMBIA Class SWS
  • Coordinate engagement of test and engineering Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) in the SWS test sequence
  • Support SWS and Strategic Weapon Support Systems (SWSS) electrical and / or mechanical waterfront engineering execution and change management for COLUMBIA Class test program
  • Coordinate with design, engineering and tech pubs and provide technical direction for the update and maintenance of COLUMBIA technical documentation (Standard Maintenance Procedures (SMPs), Ship Safety Manuals (SSMs), SWS Ship Safety Manuals (SWSSSMs), Tech manuals, Work Procedures (WPs), Change Proposals (CPs) etc.).
  • Evaluating trade work performed to determine necessary retesting for system / component recertification, issuance of SWS test procedures, configuration control of SWS test procedures, reviewing of SWS test procedures completed by trades.  Troubleshooting / deck plate support for problems found during certification testing thru PSA and Technical Availabilities. Additionally, the individual may provide assistance to the D444 CTE (Chief Test Engineer) in identifying retest requirements as required
  • Test Engineers are expected to work closely with D444 and test directors to maintain and incorporate test changes IAW OD 68347 (ITRO)
  • Potential travel opportunities to support work assignments including ShipAlt installations at Bangor, Kings Bay and UK, SWS Ashore testing at Cape Canaveral FL, and support for COLUMBIA construction and test efforts at Quonset Point. 
  • Overtime opportunities may be available at times and/or required to support the ship construction and test schedule.

Qualifications

Required:

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • 2-4 years of test experience

Preferred:

  • Experience working with SWS, associated support systems and equipment arrangements
  • Knowledge of process/procedures with EB or NAVY
  • Experience wtih of SWS / SWSS equipment for OHIO or COLUMBIA
  • Experience with submarine test programs and interface controls
