Overview

The successful Candidate will join the Accuracy Control & Optical Tool group, supporting submarine construction at the Groton Shipyard. The Shipyard is a dynamic and fast paced environment requiring prompt and technically sound dimensional control solutions. The department is responsible for ensuring that in-process dimensional control is maintained on components or systems within their purview.

Optical Tool Technicians are involved in both routine and emergent projects throughout the shipyard, that support the manufacture, assembly and test of the components, modules, decks, and hull structure from initial receipt through final grooming, test, and certification of the submarine. The Accuracy Control & Optical Tool team is responsible for all phases of the dimensional control process in shipbuilding. This includes dimensional control requirement definition and work control, job planning, execution, processing and presentation of as-built data, and continuous improvement.  This rigor helps ensure that all parts of the submarine are built and assembled to meet final design specification and requirements.

Technicians take measurements using a variety of three-dimensional and standard optical metrology equipment, and must possess a strong spatial awareness. The job requires the technician to follow a plan for measurement of the critical features, while working safely and with a high degree of accuracy. The Technician will be expected to determine the proper tooling for the job, move the tooling to the job, and complete the measurements outlined on configuration controlled requirements documents. The Technician will provide the data to Accuracy Control representatives and work with them to confirm the solutions required.  The measurements, and reference markings of the technicians are integral to develop cut lines, align and install ship components, support machining and fabrication work, establish critical ship and module alignments, inform subsequent construction decisions and document conditions in support ship certification.

In addition to routine collaboration with other Metrology Technicians, Accuracy Control Engineering, and operations trades, Optical Tooling Technicians will also interface with Engineering, Management, Operations groups, Ship’s Management, other shipyards, and external customers.  Therefore, the successful candidate must have good interpersonal and communication skills.  Writing, Problem Solving, multi-tasking and basic Project Management skills will help the successful candidate to facilitate work.

The successful candidate will need to become proficient in the use of standard optical equipment, Total Station equipment (similar to land surveying), Laser Trackers, Coordinate Measuring Machine (CMM) arms and digital photogrammetry.  The successful candidate will also need to become proficient in reading, interpreting, and working from complex blueprints, technical manuals, shipyard procedures, and test documents. This job is predominately in the production environment and occasional off shift work may be needed to support schedule. The candidate may also be asked to travel occasionally to support offsite work and ship schedules.
