Overview

Engineers in the Ship Signatures Department are responsible for ensuring that the ship's components, systems and structures are designed and built to meet a submarine's challenging radiated noise requirements.

Ship Signatures: Analysis, Integration, and Development

Ship Signatures engineers working in the Analysis, Integration, and Development group are involved in efforts to extend the state-of-the-art in acoustic analysis methods and to develop noise control concepts for current and future submarine designs. Engineers will be expected to use signal processing, data analysis, and finite element modeling experience to develop new acoustic analysis tools and methods that advance the capabilities of the ship signatures department. Engineers in this group have knowledge in the areas of finite elements, structures, acoustic instrumentation and measurements, component design, acoustic theory, signal processing, and system engineering.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Ocean Engineering, Acoustical Engineering, or Physics
  • 5+ years of engineering experience in acoustics, vibrations, finite element analysis, signal processing, or testing
  • An active SECRET clearance, or ability to obtain a SECRET clearance

Preferred:

  • MS or PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Aerospace Engineering or Physics
  • 4+ years of relevant work experience which includes, but is not limited to: acoustics; linear vibrations; structural dynamics, finite element analysis (FEA), digital signal processing, analog to digital processing, filter design, digital system design, product testing and data analysis
  • Experience using modeling and finite element software such as Altair HyperWorks, Ansys, Abaqus, and/or other computational modeling and finite element tools
  • Experience with MATLAB/Simulink

Skills

 Skills:

Excellent written and verbal communication skills are necessary for success as a ship signatures engineer. Developing productive relationships with internal and external customers, which may include collaborating across engineering organizations and disciplines, ship construction teams, government contractors and the Navy customer is key. Ability to work independently as well as in a team and to meet project schedules.
