Overview

COLUMBIA Integrated Power Systems (IPS) Engineering has an opening for an experienced electrical engineer to support the design, test, shipboard integration, analysis, and system testing of various electrical components that contain transformers, rectifiers, switchgear, and other system protection and coordination devices. The Integrated Power Systems Directorate is focused on electric drive propulsion, electric power generation, and advanced power systems. This technology is part of the continuing trend in making ships more electric, more capable, and more affordable. This position is part of a component team within the IPS Directorate that focuses on electrical distribution and power conversion for the next-generation submarine with electric drive. The group provides engineering support and oversight of vendor designs for high voltage switchgear, protection devices, and high energy density electromagnetic components. The group also provides engineering support for the test and installation of these components into the COLUMBIA Class. 

 

This specific position is for an experienced electrical engineer with substantial knowledge in power magnetics or electrical distribution design. This position is responsible for ensuring the technical adequacy of electrical engineering products within the team. This position will provide technical guidance and oversight to less experienced engineers. 

 

Responsibilities - the engineer hired for this position will be expected to:

  • Troubleshoot complex issues supporting the ship's test program
  • Investigate design issues and work with vendors to correct deficiencies
  • Perform required calculations, modeling, and analyses
  • Technical authority for interfacing with government customers (NAVSEA, NNL, NSWC, etc.) 
  • Mentor engineers with less experience
  • Support occasional overtime and travel to various manufacture and test facilities as required
  • Provide vendor management and oversight 
  • Review test reports, test procedures, and vendor design deliverables
  • Candidates must be self-motivated with effective time management skills, ability to manage multiple assignments at a time, and be able to effectively communicate with internal and external customers and management

Qualifications

Required:

  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering 
  • 6-14 years of experience in electromagnetics or electrical distribution design
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain security clearance through the department of defense
  • Ability to occasionally travel to remote facilities within the United States (Philadelphia, PA; Milwaukee, WI; Washington, D.C., etc.)
  • Experience using Microsoft products

Preferred:

  • Master's degree in Electrical Engineering or a closely related degree
  • Experience with commercial or military power systems
  • Experience using MATLAB and/or Simulink
