What You'll Experience

You'll see firsthand how collaboration drives success across departments and with our Navy partners, both on the cutting-edge COLUMBIA Class design and with ongoing improvements to the VIRGINIA Class submarines. 

 

The Team: 

 

The Waterfront Engineering - Fast Attack Submarines directorate plays a critical role in bringing submarines from design to reality. Waterfront Engineering personnel solve tough shipyard challenges, improve construction productivity, and keep testing and delivery on track. You'll be part of a team that thrives on problem-solving and innovative thinking to ensure every submarine meets the highest standards. 

 

What You'll Do

 

During your internship, you may be responsible for any of the following tasks:

  • Provide troubleshooting support on the submarines
  • Investigate and document technical responses to non-conformances
  • Support emergent issue problem resolution
  • Resolve supplier product issues
  • Modify technical manuals and publications
  • Perform calculations
  • Communicate with our Navy customers via technical submittals
  • Investigate and document design changes
  • Submit test procedure modifications
  • Participate in ship testing
  • Prepare for and execute maintenance and modernization availabilities
  • Construction engineering work including shipboard troubleshooting and test instrumentation equipment design and implementation

Program Highlights

  • Duration: A minimum of 8 weeks during Summer 2026. 
  • Location: The position is on-site and you may be placed in any of the following locations:
    • Connecticut: Groton, New London, North Stonington
    • Rhode Island: North Kingston, Newport
  • Relocation Assistance: This internship is not eligible for a housing stipend or relocation assistance.

Qualifications

Education Requirements: 

  • Enrolled full-time at a College or University
  • Completed at least Freshman year by Summer 2026
  • Pursuing a B.S. or M.S. Degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Structural/Civil Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Marine Engineering, Facilities Engineering, and/or Energy Systems Engineering. 

Availability Requirements:

  • Willing and able to work 40 hours per week for at least 8 consecutive weeks between May 2026 to September 2026. 

Skills

  • Effective written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to effectively work both independently and as part of a team
  • Ability to learn new skills and apply them
  • Ability to solve problems in a constructive manner
  • Strong interpersonal skills   
  • Proficient with MS Office suite (Word, Excel, Office)
