Overview

Instrumentation Technicians in the Ship Signatures Department are responsible for ensuring all acoustic and vibration testing is performed in accordance with technical requirements.

  

Ship Signatures Technical Aide – Instrumentation (T/A Instrumentation)

Responsibilities include test preparation and execution in compliance with given procedures, calibration, data acquisition, analysis, maintenance, troubleshooting, and recordkeeping. Working environments will include submarines, laboratories, and off-site vendor facilities. Technical Aides will be required to work overtime, alternate shifts, and weekends as needed. Technical Aides will be expected to travel to vendor and government test sites, support sea trials, complete training in radiological controls, Electro-Static Discharge, CPR, and other safety related training. Technical Aides collaborate with engineers and other technicians to complete test objectives. 

Qualifications

Required:

  • Meet one of the following:

    - An associate’s degree in electronics or electronic engineering technology

    - 5 years of technical experience 

    - a 2 year instrumentation or industrial electronics curriculum at a technical college

  • Experience in reading technical procedures, drawings and diagrams. 
  • Experience with recording acoustic signals, soldering and repairing electronic equipment such as cables, using lab testing equipment such as voltmeters and function generators.
  • An active DoD SECRET clearance, or ability to obtain a DoD SECRET clearance
  • Must meet Electric Boat and NAVSEA physical requirements for sea trials and radiation work.

 Preferred:

  • Completion of a 4 year undergraduate Engineering Technology degree
  • 4 years of related electrical technician or engineering technology experience
  • Experience test conduct, including test planning, preparation, execution, data integrity, teardown, and documentation of test plans.
  • Understanding of acoustic fundamentals including acceleration, airborne sound pressure level, and fluidborne sound pressure level.
  • Experience with data acqusition hardware and software such as Bruel and Kjaer, Siemens, LabView and National Instruments
  • Experience with Matlab code creation, editing and testing.
  • Experience with shipbuilding trades including electronics, testing, and rigging
  • Adaptability, innovative thinking, and problem-solving in dynamic environments

Skills

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office tools including Word, Excel and PowerPoint.  Must be able to create, edit and proofread documents, spreadsheets and presentations.
  • Ability to resolve problems and identify risk and opportunities
  • Excellent communication skills, written and verbal, are necessary for success as a ship signatures instrumentation technician.

  •  Developing productive relationships with internal and external customers including test and engineering organizations, construction staff, ship’s management, government contractors and the Navy customer.
