Overview

General Dynamics Electric Boat offers a unique learning opportunity for college students, providing hands-on experience in the defense industry alongside a diverse team of experts shaping maritime innovation. Our 2026 Summer Interns and Co-op Trainees collaborated with industry professionals, applying classroom knowledge to support the design, engineering, and delivery of top-notch submarines.

 

Occupational Health & Safety interns are provided with tasks that are both technically challenging and educationally stimulating. This is the opportunity to kick start your career and gain Safety & Industrial Hygiene work experience!

 

We are offering the opportunity to spend a minimum of 3 weeks over your winter break in the  department. Don't miss out on this chance to continue your professional growth within our organization!

Qualifications

Required:

  • Must be 18+ years of age.
  • Must be a US citizen.
  • Must be able to successfully pass a medically supervised drug screen and background check
  • Must be available to work 40 hours per week, Monday – Friday
  • Must be available for a minimum of THREE (3) weeks between December 1, 2026 to January 31, 2027; this requirement does not include Wednesday, December 23, 2026 through Friday, January 1, 2027.
  • Pursuing the following -

    Bachelor of Science degrees to include:

    • Safety and Occupational Health Applied Sciences
    • Occupational Safety and Health
    • Industrial Hygiene
    • Environmental Health and Safety
    • Occupational and Environmental Health Sciences (OEHS)

     

    Masters Degrees degrees to include:

      • M.S. Occupational Safety & Health
      • Master of Public Health (MPH) with a concentration in:
        • Industrial Hygiene or
        • Occupational Safety and Health or
        • Toxicology
      • M.S. Safety Management
      • M.S. Environmental Health and Safety

Preferred:  

  • Familiarity with OSHA safety and health standards or environmental regulations.
  • Strong interest in safety and/or industrial hygiene fields, or
  • Strong interest in occupational sciences/engineering and how environmental regulations apply in the shipbuilding environment.
  • Strong interest in a shipyard trade or construction environment.
  • Candidates must support and engage in programs, projects and practices behind GDEB culture and strategy, and comply with all policies and procedures

Skills

  • Effective written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to effectively work both independently and as part of a team
  • Ability to learn new skills and apply them
  • Ability to solve problems in a constructive manner
  • Strong interpersonal skills   
  • Proficient with MS Office suite (Word, Excel, Office)
