Overview

The COLUMBIA Class Propulsion Systems – Shafting Components group is seeking a highly motivated and dynamic Engineering Supervisor to lead and manage a team responsible for procurement, design, test, analysis, and manufacturing efforts for propulsion shafting components. Major components include the Low Speed Coupling (LSC), Main Thrust Bearing (MTB), Main Shaft Brake, Lock and Turning Gear (BLTG), Main Shaft Seal (MSS) system, the main propulsion shaft, and waterborne bearings.


This supervisor will oversee the D489 shafting team’s responsibilities, including specification development, component design, qualification testing, analysis, design disclosures, and component shipboard integration. The role also includes coordination with multiple suppliers to manage component development and provide technical and programmatic support throughout design, manufacturing, testing, and delivery.


Around 10% travel is expected in this role.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and develop engineering staff supporting propulsion shafting component design and integration
  • Oversee engineering calculations, component design disclosures, and technical decision-making
  • Approve or review engineering drawings, installation procedures, and technical documentation
  • Interface with internal Electric Boat organizations and provide communication to NAVSEA PMS 397, 05, and 08
  • Provide direction and oversight for supplier technical and programmatic submittal reviews.
  • Ensure team alignment with component and ship specifications
  • Coordinate testing and troubleshooting activities for components under test
  • Prepare and review technical correspondence between Electric Boat, suppliers, and customers
  • Support workforce planning, performance reviews, and cross-functional coordination

Qualifications

Required:

  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent engineering degree
  • 4+ years of post-graduate related engineering experience
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. Department of Defense security clearance

Preferred:

  • Experience in propulsion shafting design
  • Experience coordinating with internal and external customers
  • Experience with EVM, Cost Estimating, and Schedule Management
  • Active DoD Secret Clearance or higher

Skills

  • Strong interpersonal skills, leadership ability, and be capable of managing under pressure
  • Understanding of processes related to development, qualification, management, and procurement of subcontracted components
  • Demonstrated aptitude for coaching, mentoring, enhancing employee technical skills
  • Knowledge of Electric Boat engineering disclosure processes and internal procedures.
