Overview

The Offsite Maintenance and Modernization (M&M) Office is hiring an Operations Supervisor.

Maintenance and Modernization is seeking a Steel Trades Operations Supervisor to support VIRGINIA and COLUMBIA New Construction work with our partners at GD Land Systems in Lima, Ohio.

The successful candidate will be responsible for providing daily directions and technical assistance to a multi-disciplined crew, primarily in welding, fitting and visual testing (VT). 

The ideal candidate will cultivate and promote a positive TEAM environment, be highly motivated, demonstrate strong leadership and interpersonal skills, and drive innovation and continuous improvement.  The selected candidate will be responsible for interfacing with all levels of customer and EB management.  The position requires interfacing with Quonset Point, Groton, Off-Site Management and government personnel.

 

The Operations Supervisor will manage the performance of the group’s Safety, Quality, Cost, Schedule, and Continuous Improvement as well as be responsible for the administration and execution of the craft’s work paper (ie. Work orders, EWP, ERS, CN/CR’s, ERs, ACCP, etc). 

This individual will work collaboratively with on-site supervision to achieve department goals and apply corrective actions as needed to address deficiencies. The position requires a strong sense of ownership, responsibility, and accountability to achieve overall success.

The Operations Supervisor will be responsible for controlling costs while managing work execution, ensuring progress is accurately reported, and maintaining alignment with program milestones. Travel will be required to offsite locations to support coordination and oversight of related activities.

Key Responsibilities Include, but are not limited to:

  • Responsible for daily assignments and overall coordination of employees to drive maximum performance, efficiency and quality of functions
  • Provide daily directions and technical assistance to a multi-disciplined crew of Fitters & Welders 
  • Ability to effectively organize and assign work to employees such that safety, quality, schedule and cost objectives are met
  • Must demonstrate continuous effort to improve operations, reduce work order span times, streamline work processes and work cooperatively with other multi-trade Supervisors on the team to provide first time quality
  • Must have knowledge of safe work practices; ability to comprehend and follow or issue verbal and /or written instructions; willing to work as necessary to support production needs
  • Must be able to communicate effectively both orally and in writing with subordinates and supervisors
  • Must have the ability to set, assign, and measure daily production goals, instruct, mentor, motivate crew and hold crew members accountable as required
  • Responsible for the administration and execution of the craft’s work paper (ie. Work orders, EWP, ERS, TGIs, DLs, ERs, Unsats, Test Forms, etc)
  • Manage the problem-resolution process and prioritize workload effectively
  • Collaborate with site leadership to ensure readiness for inspections and audits
  • Plan for risk identification and responsive mitigation strategies
  • Improve workforce performance and productivity; establish and communicate expectations; positively motivate the workforce

Qualifications

Required:

  • High School diploma or GED  
  • 4+ years of NEWCON Electric Boat experience
  • Business and EWA travel to other shipyards/strategic partner locations is required
  • Required to work other than normal duty hours, to include shift work, evenings, weekends, and/or holidays

Preferred:

  • Vocational, Technical and Community Colleges or Apprentice programs
  • MDU and/or FLG
  • Previous AFC Experience
  • Proficient in ATA, Lotus Notes, Cornerstone, PQS
  • Knowledge of Earned Value Management System (EVMS)
  • Military service
  • Welding and Fitting experience in maritime environment

Skills

  • Highly organized with the ability to multitask within a constantly changing environment
  • Strong coordination skills across multiple disciplines and functional areas
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills, including technical correspondence
  • Strong communicator with the ability to balance priorities
  • Strong understanding of manufacturing processes and production milestones
  • Proficient in contract execution, vendor relationships management
  • Experience with SSPs, SPs, Welding Techniques sheets, MRP, NDT, MDDs, SDDs and DI’s
  • Proven track record of driving results and achieving operational success
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with all levels of EB and government management/oversight
  • Computer skills in MS Word, MS Project, Excel, Power Point, Cornerstone, ERS/EWP, EDLDR, MRPII, and Lotus Notes are necessary to successfully perform this assignment
  • The candidate must possess strong analytical, causal analysis, communication, organizational, planning, and writing skills under minimal supervision
  • The successful candidate will be expected to know, comply with and participate in site improvement goals for Safety, Quality, Cost, Schedule and Continuous Improvement
  • Proficiency with blueprints, MRP, EWP and ERS
  • Proficient in MS Suite (Excel, Project, VISIO)
