Overview

The Opportunity:

General Dynamics Electric Boat, the world’s foremost designer and builder of nuclear submarines, is seeking an IT System Engineer supporting the Manufacturing organizations within the EB Information Technology (EBIT) Department in North Kingstown, RI.  The current business needs and demands are ever rapidly changing and require an agile, flexible, analytical candidate to join EBIT.

 

Position Summary:

This IT System Engineer will as a blended role of both Forward-Deployed Engineer and Business Analyst serving as a critical bridge between manufacturing operations, business stakeholders, and technical engineering teams. In this hybrid role, the individual embeds directly within production environments to analyze business processes, understand operational challenges, and translate those needs into scalable technical solutions. They work closely with manufacturing leadership, subject-matter experts, and cross-functional teams to ensure that digital tools, automation systems, and data-driven applications are aligned to real-world manufacturing workflows.

 

This role combines deep analytical skills with hands-on technical implementation. It requires gathering and refining requirements, mapping complex processes, and identifying opportunities to improve throughput, quality, and efficiency. The engineer side of the role includes configuring, deploying, and validating software or operational technologies on the factory floor, ensuring solutions are robust, and optimized for performance in high-volume environments.

 

The ideal candidate is adaptable, customer-focused, and comfortable working in fast-paced production settings. They excel at turning ambiguous problems into structured solutions and ensuring that deployed systems deliver measurable business impact. By serving as an on-site technical partner and a strategic process analyst, this role helps accelerate digital transformation across the organization’s business systems.

 

The position is primarily on-site support, with some flexibility for part time remote work.  It will include semi-regular travel between other regional Electric Boat locations. 

Qualifications

Required:

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering or Information Technology
  • 0-5 years of post-graduate engineering experience supporting manufacturing operations, process improvement, or technical solution deployment within an industrial or production environment

Preferred:

  • Experience working in large-scale, multi-site manufacturing environments, especially those involving automation, complex supply chains, or regulated production processes.
  • Familiarity with manufacturing execution systems (MES), ERP platforms or industrial automation interfaces.
  • Experience with LEAN, Six Sigma, or continuous improvement methodologies, including process mapping, root‑cause analysis, and operational optimization.
  • Understanding of industrial IoT, edge computing, or digital manufacturing technologies.
  • Proficiency with data tools, such as SQL, Python, Power BI, or similar platforms used for analysis, reporting, and troubleshooting

Skills

  • Ability to solve complex technical problems, while also distilling complex information to present to varying levels of management within the organization
  • Ability to consult clients/customer to configure systems in line with business needs
  • Ability to lead cross-functional deployments, guide change management activities, and drive adoption of new tools or processes.
  • Comfortable working in on-site production areas, including around heavy machinery, automated systems, and fast-paced operations.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment and drive projects to successful completion
