Overview

The position being filled by this requisition is SSBN826 Reactor Compartment and Engine Room Construction Program Manager.

To characterize the next few years in the Groton shipyard as a once-in-a-generation transformation is a profound understatement.

We are delivering VIRGINIA Class submarines on successively improving spans in the Groton yard and, over the next two years, we will bring the lead COLUMBIA Class submarine (SSBN826) and lead VPM submarine (SSN803) through pressure hull closure, float-off and delivery.

During this same period, significant COLUMBIA program facilities projects need to execute to schedule to both deliver SSBN826 and SSBN827 (e.g., completion of isolated SYAB tasks, test and certification of ATLAS floating dry-dock, modification to the north wingwall, construction of additional wet berths) and create capacity for serial production of SSBN828 AFS through construction of a second SYAB, slightly smaller, for ship assembly and test.

Further, over the next two years, SYAB staffing will grow steadily – from 2,000 to 3,000 Groton Operations and Test personnel – as we receive the majority of SSBN827 super-modules and SSBN828’s reactor compartment and forward engine room modules.

We are expanding the COLUMBIA Construction Program Office team in Groton to bring SSBN826 from cold steel through final outfitting, inspection, energization, sea trials and delivery and to build our capacity for SSBN827 AFS planning and execution.

Across the next 18-24 months, on first shift, we will staff three construction program managers on SSBN826 and one on SSBN827 AFS in the Groton shipyard.  At the same time, we will also staff one program manager on second shift.

Lead ship close-down and delivery can be some of the most satisfying, demanding and rewarding work that we perform. This type of work occurs infrequently (SSBN726 1981, SSN21 1997, SSN774 2004).  Experience gained through SSBN826 close-down and delivery will provide valuable leadership lessons that candidates will benefit from for the rest of their careers, especially as we look forward to the next generation fast attack submarine, whatever that may look like. Moreover, successful capture and incorporation of SSBN826 lessons is essential to achieving SSBN827 AFS contract schedule and cost objectives.
