Overview

There’s never been a more pivotal time to join the shipbuilding industry. As the demand for modern naval technology accelerates, General Dynamics Electric Boat remains at the forefront—designing, building, and sustaining the world’s most advanced submarines. Our mission-critical work strengthens national security and supports the U.S. Navy every day.

We are seeking a Systems Engineer (Technical Lead) to serve within the Digital Quality Systems (DQS) function of Enterprise Quality Systems Engineering. This role operates at the intersection of digital system design, enterprise workflow standards, and quality-critical user interaction ensuring the digital ecosystem that governs quality execution is structured, coherent, accessible, and reliable from end to end.

This position is fast-paced, highly visible, and essential to driving operational excellence across Electric Boat’s digital processes and quality systems. The ideal candidate blends strong technical capability with business integration skills, ensuring digital workflows support consistent execution, regulatory compliance, and long-term enterprise architecture strategy.

Role Overview

The Systems Engineer (Technical Lead) for Software Technology serves as a steward of EB’s digital system architecture for quality-critical processes. This role ensures digital systems, workflows, and user interactions are defined, governed, and validated according to enterprise standards. You will guide how digital processes are structured, how workflows integrate across functions, and how usability and interaction requirements support reliable execution. This role is operationally focused, owning day-to-day governance, change participation, and usability validation while maintaining a strategic understanding of where enterprise digital architecture is heading and ensuring today’s decisions move us toward that future.

Key Responsibilities

  • Define and govern enterprise digital system architecture for quality-related processes, ensuring workflows and interactions are structured, integrated, and controlled end to end.
  • Establish usability, accessibility, and human interaction standards for quality-critical digital systems.
  • Ensure development and control of configuration maps, interaction requirements, workflow navigation models, and digital system behavior expectations.
  • Validate digital systems jointly with Quality and functional partners to ensure clarity, usability, error-proofing, and compliance with enterprise standards.
  • Participate in change activities (software enhancements, releases, requirement updates) to preserve usability integrity and configuration control.
  • Govern integration standards, interoperability requirements, and digital data integrity across enterprise systems.
  • Identify automation opportunities that reduce manual or paper-based processes and improve workflow reliability.
  • Support change management, user adoption strategies, training standards, and performance monitoring for digital workflows.
  • Maintain continuous oversight of digital system health, usability metrics, operational reliability, and improvement cycles.
  • Partner with IT (who retains ownership of technical implementation) to ensure usability correctness and interaction quality for all DQS-governed systems.
  • Collaborate with process and procedure owners across departments to ensure alignment of digital systems with regulatory, contractual, and operational requirements.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering, Information Systems, Computer Information Systems, Systems Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
  • 1–5 years of experience in engineering, digital systems, systems engineering, information management, or software development.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Defense security clearance.

Preferred:

  • Working knowledge of Teamcenter or similar PLM systems.
  • Prior EB Experience

Skills

Skills:

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with sound judgment and prioritization capability.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical documents, specifications, and drawings.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with MS Office and modern digital workflow tools.
  • Strong written, verbal, and presentation communication skills; able to communicate effectively with engineers, supervisors, managers, directors, and customers.
  • Ability to work collaboratively across functions and contribute as a technical lead guiding cross-functional workflow and digital interaction standards.
  • Experience defining or governing digital workflows, system interactions, or usability standards.
  • Experience with system requirements development or digital system validation.
  • Exposure to enterprise architecture concepts, configuration management, and digital process control.
  • Familiarity with tools such as Jira, Zephyr, or other workflow/configuration systems.
  • Experience participating in software change processes or enhancement cycles.
  • Experience in defense, aerospace, or regulated industries with complex digital systems.
  • Understanding of digital integration, data structures, and interoperability principles.
  • Proven ability to identify risks, uncover process gaps, and propose effective improvements.
  • Experience facilitating cross-functional meetings and driving alignment among technical and business stakeholders.
  • Self-starter with curiosity for how systems interact and a drive to improve digital reliability and user experience.
