The Missile Compartment Project Engineering Team is seeking an Embedded Engineer to support high‑visibility construction efforts on the COLUMBIA Program. This role places engineers directly alongside the Operations General Foreman and trade supervision to plan, prepare, and execute both planned and emergent work on the deckplates.
Embedded Engineers will be co-located with Operations to proactively identify obstacles, support real-time decision-making, and develop solutions that keep production on schedule. The position will regularly interface with multiple trades including Pipefitters, Steel Trades, Electricians, Pipe Welders, Sheet Metal Fabricators, and Machinists.
The ideal candidate is a self‑starter who can work independently, think critically, and collaborate effectively across engineering and production teams. A positive questioning attitude and strong communication skills are essential. Work areas include the Reactor Compartment, Engine Room, and exterior hull, supporting the achievement of major construction milestones.
Responsibilities of this Position Include:
- Establishing and maintaining strong, trust-based working relationships with assigned trade groups and the Operations General Foreman to ensure alignment, schedule adherence, and smooth execution on the deckplates.
- Supporting module construction and test through full-time, embedded engagement with operations—providing real-time engineering insight that enhances productivity and reduces rework.
- Enabling the General Foreman to focus on preparing and leading the trades by proactively clearing engineering barriers, anticipating upcoming needs, and ensuring material, documentation, and work packages are ready for execution.
- Becoming highly proficient in navigating design disclosures, technical documents, work orders, and shipyard processes to troubleshoot constraints and drive efficient construction.
- Identifying issues within work packages early and initiating timely corrective actions to keep work executable and on schedule.
- Communicating operational priorities clearly with the Module Lead and other interfacing organizations to maintain synchronized progress across the module.
- Ensuring operations understands the technical intent and critical aspects of upcoming work to minimize production problems and improve build plan adherence.
- Reducing liability generation by preventing deckplate issues and leveraging established shipyard practices before escalating to engineering.
- Engaging regularly with other General Foremen, and Area Superintendents to validate build plan requirements, identify opportunities to improve efficiency, and support material and equipment readiness.
- Supporting deployment of Design Yard resources. Assist in coordinating engineering engagement to align with module needs. Providing feedback to managers on performance and improvement opportunities.
- Providing deckplate support during the typical operations shift times. May include extended hours or occasional weekends, to ensure uninterrupted progress toward key construction milestones.
